Stanley Northcote Walter

Stanley Northcote Walter was born on 8th February 1891. His parents, Stanley and Elizabeth (Bessie) May Walter, were living at 59 Ellesmere Road Chiswick. His father Stanley Walter was a silversmith and in the 1911 census Stanley Northcote Walter, aged 20, was listed as a jewellery assistant.

Stanley is mentioned in the roll of the British South Africa Police as “attesting/enlisted” on 19th August 1913. He entered the theatre of war in the areas of East Africa, Nyasaland and Northern Rhodesia on 3rd October 1915 then “retrans” to British South Africa Police on 22nd November 1916”. His Commonwealth War Graves Commission entry refers to him as Sergeant 1694 BSAP. Stanley was mentioned as Acting Corporal in the Southern Rhodesia Column.

Stanley was awarded the Victory medal and the 1915 Star.

Many British men went abroad to join colonial police forces. British South Africa Police were accepting recruits from outside Rhodesia right up to the end of the war.

Stanley Northcote Walter died of pneumonia on 26th October 1918 at Salisbury, Rhodesia and is buried in the Harare (Pioneer) Cemetery.
